Ella Mai took the game by surprise this year when she began climbing the charts and became a club stable with her breakthrough hit “Boo’d Up” and though she’s become a star in her own right the UK singer is still as humble as pie.
Swinging through the Breakfast Club to talk about her sudden meteoric rise, the songstress from across the pond revealed that not only was the hit song 8 months old when people finally noticed it, but that she was ready to move on to her next single before she was talked into shooting a video for it. Building with the morning trio of of Charlamagne Tha God, DJ Envy and Angela Yee, Ella Mai also touches on other subjects such as how she was discovered by DJ Mustard, guys shooting their shot, and that sex tape rumor.

1. Quick Starts
Ella got her start on Instagram with 15 second covers of songs and DJ Mustard DM’d her asking her “What’s your situation” and being that she didn’t have one they ended up linking up. After linking up in Philly and cutting three tracks she ended up signing with the DJ in 2016.

2. Before The Fame
Before signing with Mustard, Ella was actually on the English version of The X Factor as a member of the girl group Arize. She didn’t abandon them though, she says they eventually broke up and went their separate ways.

4. Favorite Remix
Though a lot of rappers and singers remixed “Boo’d Up,” Ella says her favorite is the original with Nicki and Quavo. She also adds that it was her label’s decision to yank the fan favorite Jacquees version of the cut. That being said she also states that she loves all of the remixes made and says she hasn’t heard a wack one yet.

For guys looking to shoot their shot, Ms. Mai confesses that she’s not “boo’d up” and will in fact give you more than 24 seconds to shake and bake before pulling up. That beind said she also admits that first impressions go a long way. Good luck if you got that Lonzo Ball form of shooting.

6. Cheaters
Cheating doesn’t seem like an acceptable action when it comes to dating for Ella Mai. Though she won’t automatically cut you off for playing her because “it depends on the whole situation,” she also says she’s never cheated on anyone. Real talk if you’re lucky enough to wife up Ella Mai and you cheat on her then you ain’t sh*t. Just sayin.’

Ella says that she doesn’t post on social media too much because she love her privacy separated from her business life. That being said she did watch the sex tape that was supposedly her to see if the woman they said was her actually looked like her.
