Jay-Z Disses “We Are The World” Remake...Sorta

jay-z

In the effort to provide Haiti with relief, the U.S. has been trying to do its part to provide support to those in dire need within the country.

Coming together to remake the classic “We Are The World”, Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie pulled together a slew of artists to remake the magic first created with the help of the late Michael Jackson.

Of those to appear on the guest list, Jay-Z actually pulled a disappearing act as the rapper was nowhere to be found in the fray of the Hip Hop community.

Speaking with MTV, Jay gave the reasoning behind not being part of the song.

“I have a interesting take on that. I know everybody is gonna take this wrong: “We Are the World,” I love it, and I understand the point and think it's great. But I think “We Are the World” is like “Thriller” to me. I don't ever wanna see it touched.”

Although he may not agree with the song, he is thankful for what it has done to further aid Haiti and raised funds.

“I know the plight and everything that's going on in Haiti. I applaud the efforts. Like 1 out of 2 Americans donated through text to Haiti. That's amazing. So I appreciate the efforts and everything, but “We are the World” is untouchable like “Thriller” is untouchable. Some things are just untouchable. It was a valiant effort, but for me, it's gonna be untouchable.”

If he had things his way, Jay would have preferred that the song be something original, somewhat like “Stranded” with him, and Bono of U2.

Most would probably agree with Hov in applauding the effort, but some things just shouldn't be touched.  Who would have ever thought to see Auto Tune on “We Are The World”?

I thought the remake of We Are The World disrespected everything Michael Jackson worked for.

      WALTBABY?
How on earth did you come up with that?
Exactly in what way did it disrespect what he worked?
      Your logic fails me .

Michael Jackson only wrote the last verse of the song. It wasn't his only. It was a calabo... and sure Michael would have been the first one to want a remake of "we are the world" to Haiti. See it for what it is, a good gesture for a great cause to help so many.

The Remake is bad only if u compare it to the original version. Of course its gonna be terrible if do. It was actually pretty good in its own way. Don't forget that Quincy and Lionel approved it, so who are we to say that they shouldn't have done it. These days, for everything that anyone does, there is no shortage of dumb a s s people ready to criticize it. The song is about helping a country and we cant look past that and worry bout what people who don't know a thing about music says. They are not gonna buy and support it anyways!!

  • WALTBABY

Well @ Yogreve lil wayne was on video " I pledge allegiance to the flag and Michael Jackson is a *****." But yet they invited him to be in the video?

If that is disrespect I don't know what is.

  • http://tinkerbellinthecloset.wordpress.com yogreve

You never made a joke about someone you have respect for?
Don't even say yes, I won't believe you anyway - besides, if Lil Wayne did it for Haiti, then that's enough for me. That's why they did it - not because of Michael !
And what if Lil Wayne thought MJ was gay?

All things aside, that was not what you said .. You said WORKED FOR and Lil Waynes comment and him being part of the song has nothing to do with that!

    • WALTBABY

Well @Yogreve I am sorry you feel the need to degrade the people you admire by calling them a derogatory name, whether it was a joke or not it shouldn't have been said. And why isn't this about Michael? Isn't Michael the one who wrote the song? Didn't Michael receive more press for this video (even though he is no longer with us than) Haiti has?

Michael Jackson worked for peace and humanity in this world, for love and comp*****ion for our brothers, sister, neighbors, and friends.

But there was another video of Lil Wayne saying that he didn't have a problem killing someone, and that he would even kill a baby if you *****ed him off. Now what part of that says We Are The World?

So before you come at me for not following the m*****es and verbalizing my approval for the video, please do your research.

      That's all

    Please!!
That's so selfrighteous it hurts! You also wanna believe MJ never told a personal joke or laughed at a bad one?

    Read your own comments!
WATW25 disrespected everything MJ worked for? - Because of Lil Wayne being in it? Because he said a lot of *****? And because Lil Wayne said some stupid things it disrespected MJ working for peace?
    - No sorry .. Still doesn't make sense. You may not approve of Lil Wayne on the track, but to say the the song because of him disrespected MJ is stupid! And again, doesn't make sense.

And fine .. Let Lil Wayne say whatever he wants to and act all tough .. So what?!

Jay-Z disses a remake? Coming from the guy who make a mockery of the song "Yesterday."

The video is on YouTube. Jay-Z, Chester from LP and Paul McCartney perform "Yesterday." It basically consisted of Paul and Chester harmonizing very well, with Jay-Z grunting in the background the whole time.

Paul & Chester: "Yesterday... all my troubles seemed so far awayyyy".. Jay-Z: "uh huh, uh huh"

    You just don't do that!

Seems like these artists could have tried a little harder and come up with something more creative and in-tune with the current situation.

It also seems like the level of artists and stars has dropped well below par...

I agree with Jay Z. With all of those platnuim artist in one room. I would suggest to create a new song just as strong as "We are the world".....I believe too many cooks spoiled the broth.

i agree wholeheartedly with Jay-Z. I have donated to hati relief personally & am glad that the song helped the needy in Hati - which was it's exact purpose therefore successful, however, from a purely musical standpoint I have to call a spade a spade and admit it sounds ***** terrible even when not compared to anything let alone to the original.
Jay-Z displayed an honesty you rarely hear in the media and my respect for the guy went up because of it.

  • kingbiscuitpants

i agree as I said earlier the song is godawful, but it raised money for people who are suffering a disaster of biblical proportions therefore I'm actually glad it was made, hell anything to help. but yes a new song would have been more appropriate. but to play devils advocate the haste to get it done got the money to the needy all the quicker. and also admittedly as a hack musician and a well intentioned fool I probably would have jumped on the bandwagon if given the chance.

  • big t-bone

I don't know what the problem is nor why Jay-Z had to chim in. He cant sing, he is a rapper. What, you think he was mad because they didn't include a hook in it for him. Ya'' rap with me now...... what, what, what, I said We, We, umh, umh, umh, Yeah, what, umh .... we are are the world we are the children, takes a whole village not a squilage but a village, umh, umh huh, what lol
