Newsweek has responded to President Obama’s public support of same-sex marriage by crowning  him a gay president. The POTUS graces the cover of the latest issue, with a rainbow halo around his head under the controversial title “The First Gay President.” The cover, which hits newsstands May 21, also teases the article written by Andrew Sullivan, who theorizes that Obama’s announcement had long in the works.“When you step back a little and assess the record of Obama on gay rights, you see, in fact, that this was not an aberration. It was an inevitable culmination of three years of work,” Sullivan writes.  “He had to discover his black identity and then reconcile it with his white family, just as gays discover their homosexual identity and then have to reconcile it with their heterosexual family.”

The speculation over whether or not Obama made the announcement in an effort to drum up votes among liberals remains a topic of debate, as the Commander in Chief continues his re-election campaign. Today the president will spend his time in New York where he will deliver the commencement address at Barnard College, among other items on his agenda. Obama kicked-off his campaign run last week in Virginia, and Ohio.
