Video of Will Smith slapping a journalist for trying to kiss him at the Moscow premiere of Men In Black 3 became a viral hit, and now the rapper-turned-actor is explaining his actions. Although he didn’t really have to  (the video makes it pretty clear), Smith went on the Late Show With David Letterman last night to reveal the motivation behind the hilarious slap.

As the world saw in the video, Smith first hugged the reporter before things got weird. “I didn’t beat up a guy! No, no. I was in Moscow and … we’re doing an interview and he says, ‘Man …,’ he was a reporter and he says, ‘I’m your biggest fan, can I have a hug, please?’ ” he said. “So I go to give this joker a hug and he tries to lean in to kiss me, you know? And … it’s just awkward.”

Awkward is the perfect word to describe the situation. On the plus side, that reporter learned a valuable lesson that day: never try and kiss a black man in the mouth, especially if he’s from West Philly.
