An Ohio man got a very rude greeting recently, and all he was trying to do was take a load off. Joseph Ross of Dayton, checked into a Motel 6, Friday (July 27), and was greeted with a show of blatant racism and disrespect, when a message reading “Hello Ni**er!” popped up on the television in his room.
Ross traveled to nearby Sharonville to attend a jazz festival, and checked into the motel that was not shy about their feelings towards Black people. “I turned the TV on and when I laid back on the bed I just happened to see something on the screen and I was like, 'Ah, that ain't there, so then I focused my eyes and I couldn't believe what was on there,'” he told Cincinnati's WCPO.
A NAACP investigation confirmed that the motel was aware of the incident, but refused to give insight into why it happened. “The person who answered the phone confirmed the information was true but provided no explanation or clarity of why,” read a post on the website of Cincinnati chapter of the civil rights organization.
In addition to the NAACP, local police are also looking deeper into the situation. “We are taking this very seriously and we are looking into it,” noted Sharonville Police Lt. James Nesbi.
Motel 6 called the occurrence an “isolated incident” in a statement released Sunday (July 29). “At Motel 6, we are proud of the great diversity of the guests that we serve, and we are completely appalled by the offensive slur that appeared on our guest's television screen Friday. We are investigating to determine how this mishap occurred, and after inspecting other rooms this appears to be an isolated incident.”
While Ross has yet to take legal action, contacting the NAACP, and Motel 6's corporate office, was hopefully enough to shame the company into giving him some form of compensation.
