In conjunction with the upcoming 20th anniversary of his Illmatic LP, Nas made a guest appearance on Friday night’s (April 4) episode of Real Time With Bill Maher.

In a roundtable discussion alongside Maher, MSNBC’s Alex Wagner and other on-air journalists, the Queensbridge rapper briefly touched on his timeless debut album, before sharing his views on the escalating gun violence in impoverished neighborhoods across America.

Further into the conversation, Nas made light of DeSean Jackson being cut by the Philadelphia Eagles for reportedly being affiliated with a gang. “I just wanna know who is the gang-sinologist in the NFL,” said the rapper. “I didn’t know they had crips and bloods on payroll.”

Lastly, Nas was asked to expound on the concept behind his “Black Republican” record with Jay Z. “It’s like, we get the American plan, we get what it is,” explained Nas, who made it a point to say he isn’t a Republican himself. “We understand what’s going on. We can get down with any program that’s going on, as long as it’s fair.”
