BET programmer Kelly G has come a long way in his career. The current music supervisor for the cable network “grew up loving music,” and is noted as the mastermind behind the music for several BET programs including 106 & Park, Young Starz Tour, and Rap City.

Kelly is also credited for launching the Music Matters series which highlights artists and producers on the brink of stardom. 24 Wired linked with Kelly, who was one of four people shown on The Creator’s Suite series, where he spoke on how he made it to the executive level. “Back in 1999, I kind of just fell into this blessing,” he said. “I had met Steven Hill me and him share the same mentor, Elroy Smith, and at the time he was working for BET and BET had all of these shows on with DJs.”

His first goal was to merely become a DJ on the show Planet Groove, but he was offered the music director gig instead. “At the time I’m like ‘What’s a music director. [He said] ‘It’s basically what you do as a DJ, pick the hits.’ So since 1999 I’ve been picking the hits that you see on TV.”

Big ups to Kelly for turning his passion into a career.
