Kendrick Lamar has been putting in work promoting To Pimp A Butterfly, and his latest stop was The Breakfast Club. Despite already stopping through last November, the “King Kunta” rapper had plenty of more jewels to share.

The soft spoken Compton MC was forthcoming, answering all the questions that where hurled his way about recording the album, working with Dr. Dre, nabbing unheard Tupac audio and more.

Check out what we learned from K. Dot’s informative visit to The Breakfast Club below.

Grammys

Kendrick was locked in working on the album during the Grammys, so no—he wasn’t boycotting.

Two Years

Kendrick Lamar said he did 30 to 40 songs for To Pimp A Butterfly. He says those songs that didn’t make it are for his iPhone.

“It’s a reality check but it’s for the better at the end of the day.”

Kendrick knows how influential his music is to the kids, so he carefully chooses his words.

Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Suga Free

These artists are who Kendrick credits for influencing his music. Suga Free?! You should be familiar.

Talent

“I’m not sold on your celebrity,” said Kendrick. That’s why he locked in with low key talent like Bilal and Terrace Martin instead of bigger names for To Pimp A Butterfly.

Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith

When asked if he thought he would reach this level, Kendrick Lamar admitted he didn’t But he did say Top Dawg always believed. And Jay Rock was also very supportive and still is.
