On Tuesday (August 20), a pair of Black Oklahoma teens were charged with the murder of an Australian college baseball player. A third boy was charged as an accessory to the killing. The shocking part: the teens enacted the crime out of boredom.
As reported by NBC News, James Francis Edwards Jr., 15, and Chancey Allen Luna, 16, were charged with shooting and murdering Christopher Lane, 22, who was a senior at East Central University in the town of Ada. Dewayne Jones, 17, was charged as an accessory and for firing a shot.
Lane was killed randomly by the boys as he jogged past a home they were staying in the town of Duncan. In a chilling confession, the teens decided to murder Lane simply because they were struck with boredom.
“They saw Christopher go by, and one of them said: ‘There’s our target,’” said Duncan Police Chief Danny Ford to the Associated Press. “The boy who has talked to us said, ‘We were bored and didn’t have anything to do, so we decided to kill somebody.’”
As reported by the Australian paper, Herald Sun, one of the alleged killer’s posted on their Facebook page the message, “Bang. Two drops in two hours.” Chief Ford believes the boys would have gone on a killing spree if they had not been caught.
Lane had just finished visiting his girlfriend of four years, Sarah Harper, and was on his way home when the random shooting happened.
