Music fans’ voices were heard last night at the American Music Awards, a show that grants awards based on fan polls and album sales. Artists from all genres, including Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Nelly, and TLC also graced the stage.
Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater was the locale for the event, which Pitbull hosted. Of those in attendance, Rih-Rih was the talk of the town because she was the recipient of the first-ever Icon Award. Bill Maher introduced the singer by speaking up her stellar accomplishments, which include astronomical sales figures — 180 million singles and 50 million albums sold worldwide.
Jay Z, the man who discovered her, gave a few special words via video. Following this, Rihanna’s mother Monica Fenty gave a heartfelt speech before giving her daughter the award. The 25-year-old songstress closed by giving thanks to those who’ve helped her and her fans.
