If all goes well this upcoming March, Pharrell Williams and Three 6 Mafia will have a lot more in common.
No, that’s not a hint that the ubiquitous Neptune is dipping his dientes in platinum anytime soon. He’s been nominated for a 2014 Academy Award for Best Original Song with “Happy.”
Pharrell scored the entire movie soundtrack along with Brazilian musician Heitor Pereira. The coinciding single made history by being the first music video to span an entire 24 hours. A more streamlined version was also released.
If this very early accolade is any indication on how the rest of Pharrell’s year is set to unfold, then “happy” would be a severe misquote for how he’ll feel about his fortune. Not only is the Grammy Award-winning producer scheduled to tear down the Coachella 2014 stage with the recently reunited Outkast, his new deal with Columbia Records will feature him releasing his own solo album as well as executive producing T.I.’s next project, who also joined the label late last year.
He was also named GQ’s “Hitmaker of the Year” to close out 2013. The word “ecstatic” seems more fitting.
Very little time will tell if Pharrell wins his first ever Oscar, as the awards will be held on March 2, 2014. Visit the official site to see the full list of nominees.
