Pharrell surprised fans with the abrupt announcement of his upcoming G I R L LP, which drops in a little over a week. BBC 1’s Zane Lowe picked the Neptunes producer’s brain prior to his performance with Nile Rodgers at the BRIT Awards at London’s O2 Arena.
Skateboard P explained the inspiration for title his sophomore solo project something vague on the surface. “The reason why I named it G I R L in capital letters is because when you look at it, it looks a little weird. And the reason why it does is because society is a little imbalanced,” he said.
“I just thought, ‘Man, if I’m gonna make an album, I need to make and album that says everything I ever wanted to say — like dreamed of.’ And women have been so good to me over this entire career. They’ve done so much for my family. Everything I’ve ever gotten is because they paid for it, so they’re like my bosses.”
According to Pharrell, G I R L is his way of analyzing what women mean to him and society overall. “We need them,” P said emphatically.
G I R L releases on March 3 for your listening pleasure. Hear Pharrell’s thought process behind the body of work on the following pages.
