The 2014 ESPY Awards successfully contributed a highly entertaining spectacle for fans who tuned into the broadcast but sport fans on social media were putting on a presentation of their own.
Using the hashtag #OtherEspyAwards, several memes were generated in efforts to entertain but some managed to cross the line of civility in favor of joke attempts.
Openly gay NFL player Michael Sam possibly got it the worst as he was the recipient of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award for coming out the closet prior to getting drafted. His lengthy speech–combined with the reason for his spotlight–brought about plenty of homophobic remarks.
Chris Bosh is also no stranger to slander and he was called every prehistoric dinosaur under the sun. And while Peyton Manning got a little Photoshop ribbing for receiving the award for Best NFL Player, it doesn’t compare to the lowdown jab of calling Brittney Grinier the Best Male Athlete of the Year.
Check out the slanderous memes the 2014 ESPY Awards rung in throughout the Twitter community. Words are looking like sticks and stones, right about now.
