Lupita Nyong’o’s dominance at the Spirit, Image and SAG Awards has culminated into one very powerful win on the fateful night of March 2, 2014.
The 31-year-old actress took home the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Patsey in the touching drama 12 Years a Slave.
Upon being announced for besting her peers, which included stout competition such as Julia Roberts and Jennifer Lawrence, Nyong’o didn’t fumble with an acceptance speech letter or give long-winded shout outs.
She simply spoke from the heart.
“It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s,” she said in reference to her symbolic slave character. 12 Years a Slave is slated to be an official learning tool in public schools nationwide thanks to its unyielding portrayal for one of America’s biggest low points.
After thanking the 12 Years a Slave cast for their support and inspiration, Nyong’o gave the viewers a bit of encouragement from the bowels of her soul saying, “When I look down at this golden statue, may it remember me and every little child that no matter where you are from, your dreams are valid.”
The Best Supporting Female has proven to be a successful hub for African-American in as of late, with Mo’Nique and Octavia Spencer taking home the aforementioned golden statue in 2009 and 2011 respectively.
