Like the United States, things haven’t been going particularly well for Luke Cage lately. The once invincible hero of Harlem has gone from seemingly indestructible to fighting for his life with two space age bullets in his body courtesy of a vengeful blast from his past, Diamondback.
But Luke isn’t the only one who’s suffering the fallout from his past as Misty Knight and Claire Temple have both learned firsthand that good men come with heavy baggage. All the while Mariah Dillard is coming to grips with losing her political clout and possibly becoming the next head of the family crime syndicate. Something she has no interest in.
So where did things go from there? Let’s find out shall we.
Here’s a quick recap of Marvel’s Luke Cage, episode 9: DWYCK.
In Hindsight…
Misty Knight’s punishment for putting hands on Claire Temple is “voluntarily” speaking to a police psychologist. Aside from learning that her ability to “see” things that the average person cannot is a gift and that her decision to become a detective had to do with some childhood trauma, we also learn that her judgment in men is flawed. In other words she’s a cop who unknowingly has a thing for bad boys.
Getting Too Big For Your Britches
Now that Mariah Dillard killed off her cousin Cottonmouth, Shades is feeling himself a bit too much. That is until Diamondback reminds him that he is indeed expendable, especially since Shades is responsible for the death of Cottonmouth. A man that Diamondback considered a friend and “closer than a brother.” Shade’s gets shook once Diamondback puts a gun in his face because he know’s that he’ll put lead in his ass and drink a cup of tea (peace to Red Alert and Kid Capri!), but Zip is there to talk D-Back out of it and save Shade’s hide.
F*ck The Police
When two police officers stumble upon a half-alive Luke Cage wandering the streets they make the mistake of doing their job and try to apprehend him. After they get tossed up like they had beef with Tupac circa ’96, Luke breaks boogie continuing to search for a place to lay low.
Out The Game
Even after being ousted by the chairwoman of her board, Mariah Dillard still has political aspirations but Shades convinces her that she needs to officially get out of the street game (i.e. sell her connects to the highest bidder). So she meets with Domingo and gets him to arrange a sit down with the heads of the 5 families of the street game to see who’s interested in buying out her stake.
Off To See the Wizard
Luke eventually finds his way to Claire Temple and naturally she plays the role of that ride or die chick that we all wish we had. After opening up the Seagate files that Luke entrusted her with, Claire decides to track down Dr. Burstein (the Seagate doctor who gave Luke his superhuman powers) with hopes that he’ll be willing to help Luke and figure out how to get those two kryptonite bullets out of his body.
Back On The Case
Knowing that she has little to no choice, Inspector Ridley gives Misty her badge back so she can find and convince Luke Cage to turn himself in peacefully. Because as we all know, tis beauty that can tame the beast… or kill it.
Make ‘Em Pay
Mariah Dillard has her sit down with the 5 heads that run the streets, but before anyone can make an offer for her services Diamondback crashes the party and makes quick work of everyone except Domingo. He then turns his attention to Mariah who peaks his interest with ideas of legitimate money being made in the Marvel universe with his next-gen bullets that are capable of penetrating super skin. Especially after the dash cam video of Luke Cage roughing up those two police officers hit the airwaves. Naturally, he’s convinced.
Acid Bath & Beyond
After analyzing some of his blood samples, Dr. Burstein comes up with an idea as to how to remove the bullet shrapnel from Luke’s body: hot acid body bath. Best-case scenario, it’ll weaken Luke’s super skin enough to cut open and perform the surgical procedure. Worst-case scenario, his skin will fall off and he’ll die and painful death. It wasn’t pretty and we won’t know if it’ll work till the next episode.
