The Hip-Hop Inaugural Ball was held last night (January 20) at the Harman Center for the Arts in Washington, DC. Artists like 2 Chainz, MC Lyte, Meek Mill and John Legend were honored with awards. Legend also stated that he believe Hip-Hop helped Barack Obama become President of the United States.
“I think hip-hop had a role in making sure we elected a black president in America because we made it so that black people were in people’s homes … through our music and through our culture,” said Legend, reports the AP. “I think it made Barack Obama and more people like him possible, so I’m really thankful for hip-hop and the role it plays in society.”
Well said Mr. Legend.
The R&B singer was awarded the Humanitarian award at the star-studded event. Other award recipients included Doug E. Fresh and MC Lyte, who were both granted Lifetime Achievement awards, and 2 Chainz, won the Street Soldier award for his voter registration initiatives.
“Doing my thing on the charts is one thing, but to be getting honored on another avenue, it just feels like a blessing,” said 2 Chainz. “I’m keeping my head leveled and staying humble.”
More winners included actress Rosario Dawson (Vanguard award), Meek Mill (Community Activist award) and Swizz Beatz. Some of the night’s performers included Doug E. Fresh, Wayne Brady, Yo-Yo, Smooth (yep, the rapper) and Lil Mama while attendees included Jadakiss, Tyson Beckford, Lala Anthony, Angela Simmons and more.
