George Zimmerman’s brother likened Trayvon Martin to the accused killer of a 13-month-old Georgia baby, shot last week. Robert Zimmerman Jr. took to Twitter to make the comparison.
The older brother of the 29-year-old— facing second degree murder charges for gunning down Martin last February—posted an image linking both cases, in defiance of the alleged mistreatment his brother has received at the hands of the “liberal media.”
In the photo, Martin is seen throwing up two middle fingers next to a similar image of De’Marquis Elkins, the 17-year-old recently arrested for shooting the baby, Antonio Santiago, as he slept in his stroller. The photo is posted with the caption: “A picture speaks a thousand words. Any questions?”
The photo post was followed up with several tweets from Robert, defending his brother’s choice to shoot Martin. “Lib media shld ask if what these2 [sic] black teens did 2 a woman&baby [sic] is the reason ppl [sic] think black mightB [sic] risky,” he wrote, eluding to claims made by his brother, which led to the belief that Martin was racially profiled.
Posting the photo opened up a conversation between Robert and conservative supporters, one of which claimed that the “liberal media will ultimately blame Whites,” no matter the situation.
After Martin’s death, race became a major component in the shooting incident. George, who is bi-racial, called 911 when he saw Martin walking around his Florida neighborhood. He told the emergency operator that the youngster was acting strange and could have been on drugs. An opposite account, given by Martin’s girlfriend, who was on the phone with him at the time, paints Martin as being followed by George before being shot.
In preparing their defense, lawyers for the former neighborhood watch captain must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he was lawful in shooting Martin. Although the teen was unarmed, George maintains that he got into a tussle with the high schooler, who reportedly bashed his head into the concrete. He was carrying the weapon for protection under Florida’s “stand your ground” law, which allows citizens fearing for their lives, to use firearms on other individuals.
Martin’s image could be scrutinized by defense attorneys trying to show him as spearheading the altercation that led to his death. Photos of the teen flipping off the camera were made public not long after the shooting.
Despite claiming self-defense George recently dropped his bid for a “stand your ground” trial which could have lampooned murder case. His trial is set for June.
