Next spring, the world of Hip-Hop and all its neighboring underworlds is set to be dramatized with great magnitude with FOX’s new series, Empire, directed by Lee Daniels and produced by Danny Strong.
The network recently ordered to be a picked up for a full series after seeing its potential to become a primetime hit. Via early reports, Terrence Howard stars as the show’s main character who oversees his music empire (hence the name of the series) and all the troubles and triumphs that come with it.
Fox rolled out the Empire trailer less than 24 hours ago and it immediaely opened our eyes to drama that will be ensuing within the thick plotlines. Glamor and glitz in the music industry is a given but when you splice in family fueding and aged secrets, then the saga begins to spiral out of contr0l.
Here are nine individual things we learned about the Empire trailer, featuring music by Timbaland. It should be interesting to say the absolute least.

The Empire Is On The Time Clock
Howard’s character is diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and is only given three years to live. Any sign of weakness would immediately begin to crumple his regime. What’s a boss to do?
Adult Mama Drama
Taraji P. Henson and Henson enjoyed critical acclaim together in 2005 as their on-screen personalities meshed in the cult classic, Hustle & Flow.
Expect the complete opposite in Empire as Henson stars as Howard’s ex-wife who is looking to reclaim her queenpin status upon release from prison.
Who Is The Chosen One?
There are three sons with different personalities, techniques, skill sets and usefulness but only one spot at the top. Chances are civility will be thrown out the window.
Homophobia + Hip-Hop = Drama
In 2014, homosexuality underneath the culture’s umbrella is no longer on the DL. Gay rappers have fought for their voice to be heard and one of the main character’s is going to have fight to same battle if he is going to be the heir to throne.
1 Out Of 3 Kids Will Become A Struggle Rapper
It may be too early to tell but Howard’s character does appear to have a favorite son who just happens to enjoy the spoils of being the son of the mogul a little too much. Which creates an inner turmoil within the visible problems of the series.
The Enemies Keep Themselves Close
One of the men Howard’s character is seen running with early on is seemingly attempting to blackmail him and even calls him “a punk ass gangster.” As if there wasn’t enough beef in the broth already.
There Is Always A Cain…
From first glance, the eldest son of Howard’s character is easily the most qualified to be his father’s successor. Natural love is always divided equally so there may be a plotline for the senior son to pit his brothers against one another. Simply call it snakes in the grass at the family barbecue.
…And There Is Always A Delilah
The struggle rapper son is shown to convey all the stereotypical character flaws of a spoiled brat who was born with a silver spoon attached to his dinner plate. Throughout the three-minute trailer, he is shown to have made a plethora of bad decisions including chosing a woman who plants the seed in his brain to “claim your throne.”
Sing For The Moment
“My two sons are both releasing albums!,” Howard’s character announced at a faculty meeting, immediately stirring the pot for their sizzling rivalry. Which just provide the distraction the aforementioned eldest needs to make his move.
