Six white high school seniors basically went into hiding after they gleefully posed for a photo spelling out the word “NI**ER” with their T-shirts during a yearbook photoshoot. The flick was posted on the ‘Net Friday (Jan. 22), and you can pretty much guess what happened next.
Per the New York Post, students at Arizona’s Desert Vista High School were wearing one-letter shirts to spell:
BEST(asterisk)YOU’VE(asterisk)EVER(asterisk)SEEN(asterisk)CLASS(asterisk)OF(asterisk)2016.
Somewhere along the line, the girls thought it would be hilarious to use their shirts to spell out the racial epithet and pose for a photo. The image was posted to Snapchat before making it’s way around the Interwebs.
Officials are downright “outraged and disappointed” that it even happened. ‘The event that took place today at Desert Vista will not be tolerated ( by the way, a teacher sued the school for racial discrimination last year). It is unacceptable for any racial slur to be used regardless of intent,” school district superintendent Dr. Kenneth Baca said. ‘We need to understand that words matter. I can assure you that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.”
The students have been suspended for five days. Dear Valley Principle Dr. Christine Barela sent a letter to parents promising the students would be disciplined “in accordance with the distract policy,” and that sensitivity training would be implemented.
There’s now a petition calling for the girls to get expelled, and Barella to be fired.
