The Top 10 Hip-Hop Beefs Gone Wrong
There’s nothing like a good beef to force Hip-Hop heads to take sides. Over the years disagreements between rappers have almost become as important to the culture as the music itself. If they’re lucky, rappers can turn their disagreements into album sales. But it’s much more interesting when the opposite effect occurs. Since the Common vs. Drake’s rift has been holding our attention this week, Hip-Hop Wired decided to count down the ‘Top 10 Hip-Hop Beefs Gone Wrong.’
Peep the list by clicking on the #s. Feel free to chime in by dropping a comment.
MC Hammer vs. Jay-Z
MC Hammer reacted to what he perceived as a Jay-Z diss by dropping the laughable track, “Better Run Run.” Aside from the ridiculous flow, last time we checked a beef record shouldn’t include a choreographed dance sequence.
50 Cent vs. Rick Ross
50 Cent solidified his place as a Hip-Hop loner by going up against Rick Ross in 2009. The Queens rapper dropped “Tia Told Me,” and even used Ross’ ex-girlfriend as bait. What he didn’t expect was for the media fodder to help propel Ross’ Deeper Than Rap album to the No.1 spot on the Billboard charts.
Ludacris vs. Big Sean & Drake
If you diss Ludacris he will hit back, but it won’t be that great. Luda responded to a snub by Big Sean, and pulled Drake in the mix on “Badaboom.” Reeking more of jealousy than notable wordplay, the record will go down as a cliff note in the manual of Hip-Hop beef.
Charles Hamilton vs. Soulja Boy
Before he went missing, Charles Hamilton attempted to battle Soulja Boy by way of a few diss tracks. Even though Soulja Boy started it, within a year the Harlem pink MC was booted off his label, slapped in the face by his girl, and committed to a mental institution. Soulja Boy won.
Shawty Lo vs. T.I.
Shawty Lo mistook T.I. for an easy opponent when he ignited a beef in the middle of The Kang’s legal troubles. Before kicking off the first of his two concurrent year-long sentences, Tip addressed the issue on the track “What Up, What’s Haapnin’.” Realizing that he showed up to a gun fight with a pocket knife, Shawty later made peace with the Grand Hustle head honcho.
Young Buck vs. 50 Cent
Young Buck’s overly-emotional beef with his boss 50 Cent is so embarrassing that it doesn’t seem real. Try as he might to diss 50, Buck was still legally bound to the G-Unit imprint. 50 shot back by releasing a tape of Buck crying on the phone. Stay close, Buck.
Mariah Carey vs. Eminem
Running with Jermaine Dupri all those year’s must have made Mariah Carey think she was Hip-Hop enough to beef with Eminem. Carey mocked Em in her “Obsessed” video only to get lyrically annihilated with his “The Warning rebutal.” Even Nick Cannon had bruises.
Yung Berg vs. Maino
As if his multiple beat downs and a rainbow-colored Tranformer chain wasn’t enough to not take him seriously, Young Burg decided to stir up beef with Maino. The result? A smack in the face which hopefully taught him not to mess with Brooklyn rappers who have nothing to lose.
Beanie Sigel vs. Jay-Z
Beanie Sigel has long been lyrically gifted, but he used his powers for evil by dissing Jay-Z. Instead of spending too much energy on the matter, Jay continued to clock multi-million dollar deals and threw a quick jab via his verse on Kanye’s “Monster.”
Consequence vs. Kanye West
When Consequence blasted Kanye West last year, he made the rookie mistake of biting the only hand feeding him. The obvious publicity stunt blew up in his face, and turned him into the laughing-stock of Hip-Hop. His Movies on Demand mixtapes generated little buzz, and Kanye probably won’t ever answer his calls.
