As Bill Duke famously said in MenaceĀ II Society, Donald Trump “done f*cked up now” by attacking civil rights icon and Congressman John Lewis. The President-Elect’s attack against Lewis was met with resistance by supporters on Twitter, who called to attention the congressman’s long record in fighting injustice.
The brouhaha began when the so-called “Cheeto Jesus” depicted Rep. Lewis as a do-nothing blowhard after the congressman said that he and other prominent Democrats intend to boycott Trump’s inauguration next week during a NBC News interview.
“Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart,” tweeted Trump earlier today (Jan. 14). Since then, Democrats and supporters alike have been taking to Twitter to let Trump have a piece of their mind. Naturally, Trump isn’t addressing the tough response and is instead resorting to avoiding and bullying.
Lewis is an iconic figure of the Civil Rights Movement and was one of the many young organizers who marched in resistance to the divisive racist practices in Alabama during the peaceful SCLC and SNCC-led marches and demonstrations of 1965.
During the “Bloody Sunday” event, Lewis and several suffered brutal attacks from angered white mobs and police on the Edmund Pettus Bridge during the march from Selma to Montgomery. The nationally publicized tragedy led to the eventual passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Since 1987. Lewis has represented Georgia’s 5th district and has repeatedly been hailed as a champion of equality.
