Sloane Stephens has captured the hearts of tennis fans with her US Open win over Madison Keys on Saturday at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City. Stephens’ win was also celebrated in grand detail on Black Twitter, with many on the social media network crowning the rising star one of the game’s new leaders in the years to come.
Stephens, 24, won the final match 6-3, 6-0 over Keys, 22, which signaled a possible new era in women’s tennis as the dominance of the Williams sisters begins to slightly wane. The U.S. tennis program has been trying to develop its young core and Stephens until now, didn’t appear to be on that level. With the US Open singles title win, the Plantation, Florida native might be on her way to leading a mighty renaissance.
Black Twitter’s joy was hard to contain and since Saturday, the adoration has been growing nonstop. We’ve captured the best of the reactions to Sloane Stephens’ US Open win below and on the following pages.
